Obverse description Forepart of a wolf in left profile, rendered in bold high relief with characteristic open jaws and pointed ears, conveying the sacred animal of Apollo Lykeios, patron deity of Argos. A retrograde sigma (Σ) appears in the upper left field above the wolf's head, serving as a control mark or magistrate initial. The modelling is vigorous and naturalistic, typical of Peloponnesian mint work of the late Classical to early Hellenistic period.
