Additional information

Clovis's victory over the Visigoths at Vouillé in 507 — not 508, despite the product name — was followed almost immediately by his reception of the consular insignia from the Eastern Emperor Anastasius I, a political gesture that gave Frankish rule a veneer of Roman legitimacy in Gaul. The actual Merovingian triens was a small gold tremissis derivative, roughly 1.5g, bearing no resemblance in scale or purpose to this piece.
