Obverse description Facing busts of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile in profile, each crowned with a fleur-de-lis crown, their effigies confronted at center with a small countermark applied between them. Both sovereigns are depicted in draped attire rendered in the late Gothic hammered style characteristic of the Barcelona mint. A six-pointed star divides the legend at the top of the field. The peripheral Latin legend reads +FERNANDVS·ET·ELISABET·REX·ET·REGINA, identifying the Catholic Monarchs as king and queen.
