Obverse description Bust of Theudebert II facing right, rendered in a stylized late antique manner characteristic of early Merovingian coinage. The effigy is pearl-diademed and draped, with a beaded necklace visible at the shoulder. The facial features are schematically executed, with a prominent eye and simplified drapery folds. A beaded border encircles the type. The surrounding legend reads THIOD.BIRTI, a Merovingian rendering of the king's name.

Additional information

Theudebert II ruled Austrasia as a minor under the regency of his great-grandmother Brunhilda before eventually turning against her — the dynastic violence of the Merovingian courts being one reason coinage attribution from this period is so contested. Tremisses issued under his name were struck at multiple Frankish mints with inconsistent control, making die-linked series difficult to reconstruct cleanly.

The Belfort reference places this piece within a documented but sparsely populated group.
