| Obverse description | Facing bust of King Suinthila in the Byzantine imperial manner, depicted frontally with a stylized diademed head and pendilia flanking the face. The king is shown draped, holding regalia before him, with a cross pattee visible above the effigy. The surrounding Latin legend reads SVINTHILA RE, distributed around the periphery of the flan in the characteristic schematic lettering of Visigothic coinage. The die work reflects the degenerate but distinctive late antique style of the Tarraco mint, with bold, deeply struck letterforms. |
