Obverse description Facing bust of King Sisenand in the centre of the field, depicted in a highly stylised, degenerate manner characteristic of late Visigothic coinage, with pendilia hanging from either side of the head and a schematic drapery below. A cross pattee is visible above the bust. The surrounding Latin legend +SISENANDVS RE runs along the periphery, separated from the bust by a beaded inner border. The overall design reflects the progressive abstraction of the Byzantine imperial prototype.

Additional information

Sisenand seized the Visigothic throne in 631 by deposing Suinthila with Frankish military assistance — a deal reportedly secured by promising the Franks the Missorium of Aetius, a famous gold dish of enormous prestige. Whether that dish ever changed hands remains disputed. His reign lasted only five years before his death in 636, making Toledo-mint gold from this period genuinely scarce by survival rates alone.
