Obverse description Schematic facing bust of the king in the central field, rendered in the highly stylized late Visigothic manner, with a diademed head framed by a beaded inner border suggesting drapery or a collar. Below the bust, a monogram or interlaced letters are visible in the lower field. The surrounding legend, in angular and somewhat degenerate Latin capitals, reads RECCAREDVS RE, distributed around the circumference. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded outer border on an irregularly shaped flan typical of seventh-century Iberian hammered gold coinage.
