Reverse description A bold patriarchal cross with a forked or bifurcated upper arm — a distinctive cross pattée variant associated with the workshop of Eligius — occupies the central field, its foot terminating in a small pellet or globule. The letters EL and IC appear in the lower quarters of the cross, constituting the abbreviated signature of the moneyer Eligius. A circular Latin legend naming King Clovis and the moneyer surrounds the design, with star and crescent ornaments interspersed in the field. The overall composition reflects the refined craftsmanship for which Saint Eloi (Eligius), the royal goldsmith and moneyer, was celebrated.
