| Obverse description | Frontal crowned and draped bust of the emperor in the Byzantine manner, bearded, with large stylized eyes characteristic of Lombard die-cutting. The effigy holds a patriarchal cross potent on a globe in the left hand, while the right hand is raised in a gesture of authority. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the abbreviated imperial legend distributed in the field on either side of the bust. The rendering reflects the Beneventan workshop's crude but energetic imitation of Byzantine tremissis prototypes. |
