Additional information

Wenceslaus I ruled Luxembourg during a period of aggressive territorial expansion, acquiring Brabant by marriage in 1355 — the same year this issue begins. The tournois obol copies the French denier tournois prototype that had circulated widely since Louis IX's reforms of the 1260s, a design Luxembourg moneyers borrowed deliberately to facilitate trade in the economically tangled Low Countries border regions.

Billon struck at this weight tends to survive in poor condition; the alloy's low silver content accelerated surface corrosion in circulation, and survivors with readable legends are considerably scarcer than raw numbers suggest.
