Additional information

Pedro governed as Prince Regent from 1668 after forcing his brother Afonso VI into exile — first to the Azores, then to Sintra, where Afonso died under house arrest in 1683. The regency coinage was struck under that constitutional ambiguity: Pedro held full executive power but could not style himself king while his brother lived. This tostão therefore circulates under a title, Prince Regent, that reflects a carefully managed political fiction sustained for fifteen years.
