Reverse description A plain Latin cross occupies the centre of the field, its arms extending nearly to the inner border. Four small trefoil or quatrefoil ornaments fill the quadrants between the arms of the cross, adding decorative symmetry. The circular Latin legend IN.HOC.SIGNO.VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer') encircles the design, separated from the field by a beaded inner border and bounded by the coin's reeded, rope-textured edge. The composition reflects the deeply Catholic iconographic tradition of Portuguese royal coinage of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
