Obverse description Central field features the Portuguese royal arms: a crowned shield displaying five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with five roundels (quinas), with a bordure of castles, all surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is set within an ornate cartouche with scrolled supporters. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads IOANES IIII D G REX PORTV, partially visible due to the irregular hammered flan. The coin exhibits characteristic hand-struck irregularities typical of mid-seventeenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage.
