Reverse description A large ornate cross of the Order of Christ occupies the central field, enclosed within a plain inner circle. Each quadrant of the cross is decorated with an eight-pointed star, giving the design a bold and symmetrical appearance characteristic of Manueline coinage. The surrounding Latin legend, reading IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer'), runs within the outer beaded border, separated from the inner circle by a narrow flat field.
