Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal shield, bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) with the bordure of castles, surmounted by a royal crown with a cross finial. The mint mark 'L' (Lisbon) appears to the left of the shield and the denomination mark 'V' (five vintens) to the right, both within the inner circle. A circular Latin legend runs between two beaded borders reading the king's titles, separated by pellets as punctuation marks.
