| Reverse description | Large Portuguese Order of Christ cross (Cruz da Ordem de Cristo) prominently displayed at center, with equal arms terminating in splayed ends, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The cross fills the majority of the central field and is rendered in bold relief characteristic of hammered coinage. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer), separated by star-shaped stops, a device commonly associated with Portuguese royal coinage of the Manueline and Joanine periods. The overall strike is irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production. |
