Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the crowned royal arms of Portugal — the escutcheon of five bezants arranged in a cross (quinas) — occupies the central field, flanked on either side by a mint letter and an assayer's initial separated by a dot. A continuous Latin legend in Roman capitals runs clockwise along the outer periphery, commencing at 12 o'clock. The die-cutting is characteristic of mid-16th-century Portuguese hammered coinage, with bold shield detailing and crown form consistent with the reign of João III.
