Reverse description A cross pattée, ornately decorated and set within a beaded circle, surrounded by the devotional Latin legend 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES' (In this sign you shall conquer). The cross features elaborately cusped terminals and is rendered in high relief, consistent with the hammered technique employed at the Porto mint during the reign of João III. The overall design reflects the strong religious iconography characteristic of Portuguese Renaissance coinage.
