| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms: a shield quartered with the quinas (five escutcheons bearing the five wounds of Christ in blue and white) arranged in saltire, surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial. The shield is set within an ornate cartouche flanked on either side by decorative floral and foliate branches in baroque style. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads IOANES IIII D G REX PORTV, partially visible around the irregular flan, identifying the issuer as João IV, King of Portugal by the Grace of God. |
