Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal shield (escudo), quartered with castles and quinas (five roundels arranged in cross pattern), surmounted by the mint mark 'L' for Lisboa above the shield. The shield is set within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a beaded border. The circumferential Latin legend reads +FERNANDVS:D:G:REX:PORTVGAL, identifying the issuer as King Fernando I of Portugal. The hammered flan shows characteristic irregular roundness typical of 14th-century Portuguese billon coinage.
