Reverse description Central device comprising a cross formed by four Portuguese royal escutcheons, each shield charged with five roundels (quinas) arranged in cross pattern, representing the traditional arms of Portugal. The four shields are disposed in the cardinal positions around a central fifth shield, all set within a beaded inner circle. The Latin royal legend of Fernando I runs continuously around the periphery between a beaded inner and outer border, the lettering in a Gothic-influenced medieval style typical of late 14th-century Portuguese hammered coinage.
