| Obverse description | Left-facing laureate bust of Marianne, crowned with an olive wreath and her hair gathered in a flowing chignon, rendered in high relief in the neoclassical style after the original design by Alphonse Lechevrel. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, with fine sculptural detail in the hair and drapery at the shoulder. The legend REVOLUTION FRANÇAISE curves along the left and right periphery, read vertically on each side. Below the bust, in the lower field, the inscription ESSAI 1980 appears to the left, and the attribution D'AP. A.LECHEVREL to the right, with the die number 1 at the bottom centre. The coin is bordered by a raised beaded rim. |

| Additional information |
The Monnaie de Paris began developing its commemorative series for the 1989 bicentennial of the French Revolution nearly a decade in advance, and this 1980 piece is an early project strike from that planning phase — not a circulation issue and not a standard proof, but a design study submitted for institutional review. Such projet tokens rarely escaped the mint's archives.
