| Obverse description | A finely engraved maritime scene dominates the central field, depicting a large full-rigged sailing vessel under billowing sails navigating choppy seas, with a second vessel visible in the middle distance to the right. The ships are rendered in considerable detail, with rigging, masts, and hull clearly articulated in low relief against a lightly worked background suggesting wind and sea spray. A circular raised border frames the composition, within which the legend arcs along the upper periphery. The engraver's signature E. DUBOIS appears in the lower exergue beneath a horizontal base line. This piece, struck in lead as a one-sided pattern, exhibits the irregular planchet and pronounced collar typical of a trial or presentation strike. |
