| Obverse description | The official Seal of the Department of the Army rendered in high relief at center, depicting a Roman cuirass upon which rest a sword, rifle, cannon, bayonet, and other military accoutrements, flanked by crossed flags including the Stars and Stripes, with a Phrygian cap atop a sword above a scrolled ribbon bearing the motto. The encircling legend is separated from the central device by a beaded inner border, with a further beaded outer rim. The date 1775, marking the founding of the Continental Army, appears in the lower exergue. |
