Reverse descriptionThe reverse of the medal features our national emblem, the Eagle, with the wings displayed. The balanced scales of Justice, and the key denoting an office of state have been a part of the Treasury Department seal since its use by the Board of Treasury under the Articles of Confederation. In the eagle`s right talon is the olive branch, symbolic of peace. The stars on the United States map denote locations of the 17 mint institutions, past and present, which have played a part in our Nation`s history since establishment of the Mint and a national coinage system in 1792.
