William IV's brief reign over Hannover — he held the throne from 1830 until his death in 1837 — was complicated by the fact that he ruled it entirely from London as King of Great Britain. The personal union between Britain and Hannover, in place since George I in 1714, meant Hannover maintained its own currency and mint administration while its king never set foot in the kingdom. This coin is a product of that absentee monarchy.
