Obverse description Facing bust of the haloed Saint Paul, patron of Münster, depicted seated behind a woven balustrade or rampart, holding an upright sword in his right hand and resting his left hand upon a book; the figure is rendered in a formal, slightly archaic style. The date 1801 appears in the lower field beneath the balustrade. The surrounding legend, separated from the central device by a raised inner circle, reads CAPIT: CATH: MONASTERIE: SEDEVACANTE 1801, denoting the sede vacante issue struck by the Cathedral Chapter of Münster during the vacancy of the episcopal see. A small floral ornament serves as a punctuation stop within the legend.
