Additional information

John Theodore of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort issued this thaler during one of the most destructive phases of the Thirty Years' War, when the Rhineland counties were being systematically devastated by troop movements, requisitioning, and outright pillage. The Löwenstein-Wertheim line had only recently split into its Catholic Rochefort branch — John Theodore's line — and the Protestant Virneburg branch, a confessional division that placed the two cousins on opposite sides of the conflict tearing through their shared ancestral territories.

Coinage from minor Rhenish counts in 1624 was rarely struck in large volume, and many issues served as much as political declarations of sovereign standing as circulating money.
