Additional information

Struck to commemorate the 1745 marriage of Johann Ludwig, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, this issue belongs to a tradition of Hochzeitsmünzen — commemorative wedding coins — that the German princely states produced with particular enthusiasm throughout the eighteenth century. Anhalt-Zerbst was a minor principality by any measure, but it punched above its weight in dynastic visibility during this decade: the same court had already dispatched Johann Ludwig's sister Sophie Auguste Friederike to Russia just two years earlier, where she would eventually become Catherine the Great.

That connection to St. Petersburg gave the Zerbst court brief but significant European relevance. Mann 354 is not a common piece.
