Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing effigy of King Johann of Saxony occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back behind the ear. The portrait is executed in a naturalistic Neoclassical style characteristic of mid-19th-century German coinage. A continuous circular legend reading IOHANN V.G.G. KOENIG VON SACHSEN surrounds the bust, separated from the toothed border by a inner beaded rim. The mintmaster's initial F appears below the truncation at the base of the portrait.

Reverse description The quartered arms of Saxony, comprising the traditional barry of ten or and sable with a bend of crancelin, are displayed on a heraldic shield supported by two ornately draped mantling panels and surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial. The circular legend, divided across the upper and lower fields, reads 3 EINEN THALER and 42 EINE F.MARK, denoting the coin's dual denomination equivalences. The date 1856, flanked by decorative star ornaments, appears in the lower portion of the legend along the beaded inner border.
