Additional information

Johann Konrad II von Reinach-Hirzbach served as Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1705 until his death in 1737, presiding over a diocese whose temporal authority had been effectively expelled from the city of Basel itself since the Reformation — the bishop's seat had relocated to Porrentruy in 1527 and remained there. This thaler belongs to a modest coinage program typical of the smaller ecclesiastical territories of the Holy Roman Empire, where silver strikes were as much political assertions of princely rank as they were monetary instruments.
