Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Great Britain and Hanover, surmounted by a crown with fleur-de-lis and arched bands. The shield incorporates the arms of England (three passant guardant lions), Scotland (rampant lion), Ireland (harp), and the Hanoverian devices. The date 1788 is divided on either side of the shield, with the denomination mark (1/3) displayed in an oval cartouche at the base. The encircling Latin legend reads GEORG.III.D.G.M.BR.FR.ET.HIB.REX.F.D., with fineness notation FEIN SILB flanking the lower shield.
