| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the quartered arms of Stolberg, flanked by the mintmaster's initials and divided by the denomination and fineness statement. The date 1765 appears within the legend, which encircles the coat of arms along the periphery. The inscription records the names and titles of the joint counts Friedrich Botho and Carl Ludwig, along with the fractional value and silver fineness designation 'FEIN SILB.' Stolberg-Stolberg was among the smallest of the German imperial counties, and by the mid-eighteenth century its ruling house had long practiced partition, dividing governance between co-ruling counts rather than consolidating authority. Frederick Botho and Charles Louis issued jointly under this arrangement. The two-thirds thaler denomination itself was a north German convention, pegged to the Leipzig monetary standard of 1690, which set 12 two-thirds thalers to the Cologne mark of silver — a system still functioning in Stolberg's mints three-quarters of a century after its adoption.
