Francis I held the imperial title and appeared on Hungarian coinage as co-ruler, but real authority in Hungary rested entirely with Maria Theresa. His inclusion on these thalers was a constitutional formality — Hungarian law required a king, and Francis filled that role on paper while Maria Theresa governed in fact. He died in 1765, which closes the series and explains the relatively short production window despite spanning nearly a decade and a half.
The H#1787 and H#1789 references indicate distinct die varieties within this type, a common feature of Vienna-era thaler production where multiple working dies were cut across consecutive years.
