August William ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel from 1714 until his death in 1731, ascending after the line of his brother Ludwig Rudolf temporarily stepped aside. The ⅔ Thaler denomination — effectively a Gulden in function — was the workhorse of north German silver commerce in this period, and Brunswick mints produced it in quantity to service trade across the fragmented Lower Saxon territories.
Davenport's SG#347 designation places this squarely within the standard north German ⅔ Thaler series, though Welter's finer attribution at 2381 distinguishes the specific dies used under August William's early reign issues from those of his predecessors.
