Obverse description The arms of Basel — a black diagonal staff on a white field — displayed within an elaborate baroque cartouche formed by ornate foliate and scroll-work strapwork. The shield is set centrally within the decorative frame, which fills much of the coin's field. The peripheral legend reads DOMINE ⋆ CONSERVA ⋆ NOS ⋆ IN ⋆ PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace), separated by mullets, running clockwise around the toothed border.
