Obverse description A rampant lion to the right, serving as the heraldic supporter of the arms of Zürich, occupies the central field. The lion brandishes an upright sword in its right forepaw and supports with its left a crowned shield bearing the divided black-and-white arms of the city. The composition rests on a decorative foliate base, and the whole is enclosed within a beaded inner border. The circumscribed Latin legend reads MONETA * NOVA * REIPVBLICÆ * TIGVRINÆ *, identifying this as the new coinage of the Republic of Zürich.
