| Reverse description | Central field displays the arms of the City of Metz — a shield bearing a vertical sword — set within an elaborate cartouche of interlaced strapwork and foliate ornaments with fleurs-de-lis at the terminals. The date 1638 appears to the left of the cartouche within the field. The circumferential legend MONETA CIVITA METENSIS runs around the periphery, divided by a rosette ornament at the top, all enclosed within a beaded border. The overall design reflects the ornate Baroque heraldic style typical of seventeenth-century French civic coinage. |
