Obverse description Central field displays the Basel crozier (Bischofsstab), the heraldic symbol of the city, rendered in bold relief with its characteristic curved volute at the top and flared base, flanked by the date 16-21 split to either side of the staff. The design is enclosed within a plain inner circle surrounded by a twisted rope border. The circumferential Latin legend reads · MONETA · NOVA · VRBIS · BASILIENSIS, denoting this as the new coinage of the city of Basel, separated by lozenge-shaped stops and set within the milled outer rim.
