Additional information

Thann, in upper Alsace, issued this thaler under the authority of the Habsburg administration — the city had passed to the Habsburgs in 1324 and remained a key regional center through the sixteenth century. The 1511 date places this squarely in the reign of Maximilian I, whose aggressive promotion of the thaler format across Habsburg territories gave cities like Thann the political cover to strike their own issues. Very few municipal thalers from Alsatian cities survive from this early in the series.
