Obverse description Dionysus shown in a semi-recumbent pose astride a walking ass facing right, his nude torso upright and turned toward the viewer. The god holds a thyrsus diagonally across the field in his left hand, its foliage visible above, while his right arm extends holding a cantharus. The composition is rendered in a bold, high-relief archaic-transitional style characteristic of fifth-century Macedonian coinage, with the ass depicted in naturalistic walking movement and the figure of Dionysus conveying a relaxed, Bacchic dignity.
