Reverse description A male goat strides to the right in a naturalistic walking pose, rendered with careful attention to muscular detail and the distinctive long beard of the animal. An eight-rayed star appears in the lower right field, serving as a secondary type or control symbol. The entire design is contained within a square incuse punch, a technical feature typical of early Thracian coinage. The reverse inscription ΑΙΝΙΟΝ identifies the issuing city of Ainos in the Thracian Chersonese.

Ainos — the Thracian coastal city at the mouth of the Hebros River — was a prosperous Athenian ally whose mint operated with unusual independence for a Aegean tributary. The tetrobol fraction served local commercial exchange at a moment when the city was caught between Athenian imperial ambitions and the growing pressure of Thracian dynasts inland. By the 370s, Ainos would lose effective autonomy to the Odrysian kingdom under Kotys I.

The May corpus remains the foundational reference for Ainian coinage, with #395 placing this issue within a tightly sequenced die study.
