Akanthos, a Macedonian coastal colony founded by Andrians, occupied a strategically vital position on the Athos peninsula — the same neck of land Xerxes famously ordered his engineers to canal through in 480 BC to spare his fleet from rounding the dangerous cape. The city struck silver coinage of notably consistent quality throughout this period, drawing on access to the rich mining districts of the Thracian hinterland that would later make the region a target for Athenian and eventually Macedonian imperial ambition.
