Obverse description Facing bee depicted in high relief at center, with naturalistically rendered segmented abdomen, outspread wings, and prominent head; the bee is framed by a border of pellets encircling the flan. The city ethnic abbreviation Ε and Φ appears to either side of the bee's thorax within the pellet border, identifying the issuing city of Ephesos. The design is boldly executed in the characteristic Ephesian style of the late fifth to early fourth century BC.
