Trajan Decius came to power after Philippus Arabs sent him to stabilize a mutinous Danube army — a mission that backfired when the troops proclaimed Decius emperor instead, forcing a civil war Philippus lost at Verona in 249. The Antioch mint, one of the most productive in the eastern empire, issued this billon tetradrachm during the single year Decius held the city's allegiance before his death at Abrittus in June 251, the first reigning Roman emperor killed in battle against a foreign enemy.
