| Additional information |
Syracuse in this period was governed by the Gamoroi — a landed aristocracy whose name derives from the Greek for "those who divided the land," referring to the original Corinthian colonists who parceled out the Sicilian territory. Around 491 BC, a democratic uprising backed by the native Sicilian Kyllyrioi drove the Gamoroi into exile at Casmenae. They were restored shortly after with help from Gelon of Gela, who then used Syracuse as his power base to establish the Deinomenid tyranny — effectively ending the aristocratic republic these coins represent.
