Obverse description Diademed and bearded bust of Shapur I facing right, wearing a mural crown surmounted by a korymbos (hair bundled in a globe), with vertical earflaps flanking the face. Curly hair rendered in a tight ball at the nape of the neck. A Pahlavi legend encircles the effigy, identifying the king as Mazda-worshipping lord and King of Kings of the Iranians. The portrait is executed in the characteristic high-relief, stylized Sasanian tradition.
