| Reverse description | Shallow incuse square of quadripartite linear design, with the square divided into four triangular sections by diagonal incuse lines meeting at the centre, a hallmark of the archaic and early classical coinage of Abdera. The magistrate's name is inscribed in Greek letters around the interior of the incuse square, reading ΕΠΙ ΠΥΘΙΝΝΕΩ, identifying the eponymous civic magistrate Pythinnes responsible for this issue. The incuse technique reflects the standard reverse treatment employed at Abdera throughout the fifth century BC. |
