Obverse description Griffin seated left in profile, right foreleg raised in alert pose, wings folded along the body. To the left of the griffin, an open hand with fingers pointing downward toward the right is depicted in the field. The design is rendered in fine archaic Greek style with careful attention to anatomical detail of the mythological creature. The composition fills the flan with the griffin as the dominant central motif, characteristic of Abderite coinage of the mid-fifth century BC.
