Obverse description A sphinx seated left in the field, rendered with finely detailed folded wings and a human female head turned to face left, with flowing hair. To the left of the sphinx, a tall amphora with pointed base is depicted in the lower field, surmounted by a bunch of grapes — both emblematic civic symbols of Chios. The figures are executed in high relief in the accomplished Ionian style, with naturalistic musculature and careful attention to the leonine body of the creature. No inscriptions appear on the obverse; the design fills the flan with compositional balance characteristic of the period.
